any one of several small, brownish or yellowish insects often found in kitchens and around water pipes. Cockroaches usually come out at night. They have flattened oval bodies and an unpleasant odor. »

If the cockroaches Blatta and Periplaneta are subjected to alternating 12-hour periods of light and dark, their activity is largely confined to the latter (J. L. Cloudsley-Thompson).
